Data gathered revealed the solution had been found for the Chromatic Nuclear Tomato’s multi-stage fuel system gremlin. Guarded celebration and hope peeped into the Mike Romine pit are Saturday night here and there. Sunday, the team was ready. De-tuned for the power the Nuclear Tomato had strength to utilize, the clutch set-up stepped down a bit and the fuel system dramatically reduced. It was a pseudo-educated stab in the dark.
At the finish line after first round, there were definitely expletives under Mike Romine’s helmet. With the stab, they’d missed. “It tried to go,” Romine explained as if praise helped the feelings of the motorcycle within earshot. “I don’t know if it spun the tire at the starting line or not. But it kicked to the left and headed to the wall. I had to let off. It wasn’t the track. It was hot but not that bad. We just missed it. Had we gone straight, it would have been a decent run.” As if the data taunted him, Romine refused to be discouraged. Romine had the reaction time advantage by .019. “I did everything right going down the track, but letting off and pointing it back toward the finish line took time that we couldn’t afford.” Romine ran a 7.062 at 184.65. Harris, the Wizard, confirmed the results. “I’ll just say we were unlucky when the bike skated toward the wall. What we learned last night proved to be good when we downloaded the data. Had he not had to lift, it would have been a good race.” Romine’s His best of the weekend was his one solid qualifying pass on Friday.
“We’ll go to the Michigan race in two weeks ready for our first IHRA win” The US 131 track is the closest IHRA event to home in Sturgis. “And my brother Jack will be riding the Flyin’ Banana there, so we’ll have a two bike team for these guys.”
Tire spin is all clutch and fuel. That’ll be the focus of the team over the next 10 days. Don’t be surprised if you hear rumors of the team testing in the duration. As the local Nitro Harley team, Romine and team will be guests at Media Day Thursday in Martin.
If testing doesn’t consume his time, Romine’s going car shopping. “I’ve always wanted a’32 or ’34 roadster. But I’ve always spent my money on some kind of racing.” Doug Vancil will spend his down time in Sturgis at Romine Racing. Together, they’ll attempt to find the perfect fit for Romine. “If anyone has one, preferably red with flames, they should contact me. 616/651-9081.”
Mike Romine’s Nuclear Tomato is sponsored by Chromatic, Andrews Products, Ross Pistons, Saddlemen, Autolite and Romine Racing.
