Back to his ‘normal’ clutch and ignition set-up, Mike Romine’s struggling with what ‘normal’ is. “That’s the first run we’ve had since we swapped the clutch back and we ran a 7.11.” His time-slip showed no numbers he liked. “That should have been our second run, but the ignition wire loosened the first run and we had a ten second pass.” The Nuclear Tomato never had a chance.
Reviewing the data from his on-board computer, Romine’s screen was full of squiggly lines. “You can see here that the 1.19 sixty foot is way off for us. I had to shut it off at 4.9 seconds. It didn’t hook up until we were on the run four seconds. The ‘hook’ lasted one second, then I shut it off.” Romine shifted at almost three seconds, then the tire shook loose again.
Tire spin plagued more than half of the 11 bikes entered at the Maryland International event. Having gathered enough data to make a solid clutch decision, the team has high hopes for Saturdays qualifying rounds. Romine sits ninth, one spot outside of the field.
