For the first time in a couple of years, Mike Romine will sit out Sunday eliminations at an IHRA National event. “Yes, it’s true,” said Patty Romine.” But we have qualified at every one in 2001 and 2002, up until now.” Obviously disappointed, Romine took it well. “I just never got a handle on the clutch. When we went there with enough weight on the clutch to go what we thought was quick and fast, it would smoke the tire. When we’d take weight off to try to get down the track and not smoke the tire, the clutch would slip too bad and it would burn it up 200 feet down the track.” Not a great experience for a championship earning man. Juggling the tune-up, Romine’s odds weren’t in his favor.
Romine’s focused on his top five points position for the end of the year and the Screamin’ Eagle Shootout at Rockingham on the third weekend of October, along with the IHRA Finals. Next weekend, he’ll go to the infamous (to the motorcyclist) AMRA Bowling Green finals. “We’re going there to wrap up the title. We haven’t attended all of their events because we’ve been focused on IHRA. But we’ll go for it.”
