NHRA Route 66 Eliminations | NHRA Carquest Nationals Route 66 Raceway Park, Joliet, IL September 28, 2003 Screamin? Eagle Nitro Harley | Round One Elims
Stordeur 6.761 214.9 Silcox 8.101 154.99
Steve Stordeur We think we had two wrong way on the tune up and it was too lean. We hope. We fattened it up now and we?ll see what it does. Nothing like we wanted. It slowed down all the way.
Mark Cox 6.488 214.72 Jack Romine 6.626
Mark Cox It was pretty much like our qualifying run. We?re trying to play it conservative and get by round one. I have to step it up now. Doug ran a good number. That?s who we have now.
Jack Romine It slowed down a little bit. And I don?t have a whole lot to say about my run. Cox ran a 48 against me. I?m getting excited about Mike?s bike running a 33. Hopefully thy can be competitive and have a good race with Doug in the final.
Doug Vancil 6.282 226.54 Drums Brancaccio
Doug Vancil It was a good smooth run. We?ll see if we can repeat. Everything worked good. We got the top end with good early numbers and it was a good, solid smooth run.
Drums Brancaccio There ain?t nothing for that. Obviously we thought we put enough clutch in it but obviously we didn?t. I didn?t feel like it was on a bad run. And I just watched him walk away. It?s amazing to see how quick that bike went away. I?m just glad to be out there. It?s great to be a part of that run. It was the fastest I?ve run in my life. I would like to have run some 30?s and 40?s but we haven?t had much experience with my bike on a real good track. Doug just did what we all expected him to do. It was good. I went over there and told him I hope he runs a teen.
Johnny Mancuso 7.567 132.25 Mark Conner 6.550 216.17
Mark Conner I?m glad Johnny wasn?t in the other lane after the finish line. I kind of pulled Johnny. Well we?re at an NHRA track with NHRA rules, aren?t we. It was pretty smooth. It?s going straight for me now. We?re just working on the numbers from there. It has plenty of top end. The short numbers are what we?re working on.
Johnny Mancuso It was just a complete pig leaving the starting line. If Steve?s bike recovers in the semi-final and steps up, we know that we?ve gone the wrong direction the whole weekend. Mine went out there 6-700 feet and threw the chain. Other than losing the rear chain, we don?t know what to attribute it to.
SEMI FINAL ROUND MarkConner 6.339 225.45 Steve Stordeur 7.004 207.48
Steve ? Shrugged shoulders. Must have gone the wrong way.
Conner ? Wow! That was cool. You could have told me it went 6.65 and I would have believed you. I think I just got a good line and it just did what it was supposed to do. It didn?t go crazy in the shutdown like it did last round when I went in front of Johnny. It was my personal quickest and fastest. And probably the most boring pass I ever made. Mike Romine ? Mark?s dong a great job. We made a major change there that we probably should have made first round when we showed up here. Mark hadn?t ridden the bike. We were just trying to ease into it. I know he can ride it with everything I can put to it. This track is really good and we just haven?t been putting enough in it. I probably put more of everything in it than I?ve ever put in a motorcycle and it stuck. That tune-up will work in a place like this, but it won?t work where we normally race, that?s for sure. The conditions are just perfect. We hit a good combo there.
Doug Vancil 6.294 216.41 Mark Cox 6.579 227.61
Mark Cox We just got beat. We didn?t intentionally get more conservative. We just ran slower in the short time. Obviously we had to do something and throw something at it to chase Douggie down. We just backed up. We?re learning.
Doug Vancil We were able to repeat and that?s good for us. It was pretty good other than I think it got lean too soon. I think that?s where the miles per hour went. We were able to repeat, so it wasn?t a fluke. Mark ran a 33. We?re just gonna run the same tune-up again. Just ride it. I
Julie Vancil What a great weekend. We ran a couple of twenties. Hopefully we?ll run another. This is a good atmosphere. A good place to be. It doesn?t get any better than this. Mark ran really good, too.
FINAL ROUND
Mark Conner 6.773 188.15 Doug Vancil 16.818 46.98
Mark Conner ? It was gonna be good race. We picked up on our short numbers and I just couldn?t keep it in the groove. I started looking back for Doug and working the throttle trying to get to the tinish line first. Really, really, really, really, really, really need to thank Mike and Patty Romine, Chromatic, RMC, Lucas Oil, PMS Excavation, GP Manufacturing. Dan the Man. For being Doug Vancil?s pit rat.
Will Conner be forced to instantly ?come down? next weekend when he rides a different Nitro Harley? Are you kidding I went 6.33 225, I have an illegal smile for a long time.
