Ten-thirty p.m. at the AHDRA Finals third and last qualifying round, Mike Romine bumped both RMC Racing team members to take second in the impressive 33 bike field. Drums Brancaccio landed third with a 6.474 at 212.06. Jack Romine finished seventh on his one good pass at 6.472, 214.66 miles per hour.
First round qualifying listed Jack Romine number three at 6.786, 190.59. With a decent first round, he attempted to step it up a bit. He spun the tire in the second round then the third.
Drums led the team in the second round. "We went a 4.21 at 178 miles per hour 1/8th mile. With a 2.83 330-foot time, 350 feet out it became a rocket. It was the best 1/8th mile and ¼ mile I've ever run." Drums first round was a dud at 12. 37. "We smoked the tire in the heat of the day. We didn't want to change too much for the second round, so we just took a tooth off. The track was in the shadows for most of the afternoon. I was praying that the track would hold the power. I did a really strong burnout to get the tire good and hot. I hit the throttle. It was nice and straight. The motor is really working good. It felt real good. I knew it was a good pass. I hope my Mom and Dad are watching the internet. How's that?"
Big brother Mike wasn't savoring his day in Vegas, until the last round. "First round I broke a belt at 3.8 seconds. Second pass I just took all of the clutch way back off of it. It's really pissed me off to have to do that. I said this thing will only run a 6.60 the way this clutch is. First round I broke a belt at 3.8 seconds. This pass I just took all of the clutch way back off of it. It's really pissed me off to have to do that. I told him this thing will only run a 6.60 the way this clutch is." Romine's ticket read 6.604, 210.34. "I'm gonna stand on it now. I'm qualified now so I'll go back and split the difference between now and when I broke the belt. I had to do that just to get into the field."
Stand on it, he did. Romine was the last pair of the day and broke into second with a 6.472 at 214.66 miles per hour.
After a season of running and tuning three bikes, Romine was visibly satisfied with the final qualifying. "They're three identical motorcycles but they all act differently. Mine responds to clutch weight. The belt will only allow so much. Jack's bike seems to respond to ignition timing. If you put a lot in, it runs better. Mine doesn't. Drums' bike is more like mine, it's more in the clutch. His bike won't take the fuel that my bike will take, though. I try to put the same volume of fuel through it and it shuts off on the top end. We're three different teams under one canopy because the bikes respond differently."
For Sunday, RMC Racing qualified two, three and nine. Eliminations begin Sunday at Noon. AHDRA awards are Monday evening.
Mike Romine, Jack Romine and Drums Brancaccio are sponsored by RMC Racing, Romine Racing, Oceans 11 sports bar in Hollywood, FL, Chromatic Inc, Performance Machine, Ross Racing Pistons, Fram, and Autolite.
