Mike Romine knew it was going to be hot in Bristol, Tennessee for the AHDRA Thunder in the Valley Nationals, but he did not know that he would be the one supplying the heat. After unloading to a first round 6.63 to take the #1 qualifying spot, Romine continued his bracket-bike like charge to the victory with 6.62,6.64, 6.64, and 6.67 wins in eliminations. 'I really try to focus on consistency, because that is what wins races,' Romine stated. 'After the first round of qualifying with a mild set-up, I put more in it just to see what the track would take. Although the track was in good shape, the hot, humid weather just wouldn't let me get any more aggressive. I just put the 6.60 tune back in and let the big dog hunt.'
The Bristol win is #2 at the track for Romine in 2005 after a victory in May at the NHRA O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals, and win #4 for the season. Romine also is leading the points chase for the NHRA Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley Exhibition Class.
Romine's Crew Chief and wife, Patty, was ecstatic after the win, 'We did exactly what we needed to do at this race. The bike is performing very well and we feel that we are on top of our game. Exactly where we wanted to be with only four races left.'
The Romine Racing team was especially pleased to have won with their fellow Salt Lake City Harley-Davidson race team in attendance. Romine reflected, 'Joe Timmons and his team made the long journey here all the way from Utah. Though Joe and I were hoping for a final round confrontation that didn't happen, I am really glad that we could include them in our victory celebration.'
