New paint job. New sponsors. Same old spectacular Romine performance. Mike Romine showed up at the first AHDRA points race in Gainesville, FL with high hopes and all his homework done. With the bike painted an uncharacteristic black - a shock to many long-time Romine fans - he proceeded to display the same performance that captured the 2005 AHDRA Top Fuel National Championship, running consistent 6.40's until the final round, when he stepped up to a 6.36.
'Over the winter, I studied race charts, did calculations, collected spare parts, and tried to plan for anything and everything. I wanted to come out of the trailer ready. I am very pleased, I feel that that is just what I have done', Romine stated. 'We are welcoming a couple of new sponsors and this is the best way to do it. Our new sponsors are Edge Motorsports, Midwest Custom Case, and United Specialties. We are excited and happy to have them on board, while still maintaining our sponsors from last year - Harley-Davidson of Salt Lake City, Chromatic, Performance Machine, Ross Pistons, Autolite/Fram and, of course, our own company, Romine Racing, who supplies us with the cases and builds our motors.'
After a narrow-margin victory over his brother, Jack, in the semi-final round, Mike was delighted to meet his long-time friend and competitor, Bill Furr, in the final round. After the race, both racers joked at the end of the track about it being 'just like old times'.
Crew-chief, Patty Romine, summed up the team's performance, 'Once again, consistency was the key. This is our focus and our goal. One truly spectacular pass is great, but races are won by knowing what your bike will do on each racetrack and doing it over and over. This is exactly how we wanted to start the season - now on to Round Two!'
