Nearing the mid-seson mark of the 2006 season, Mike Romine is pleased with his race record thus far. After attending six races (five AHDRA and one NHRA), he has appeared in four finals, winning three of them. 'Once again, consistency has been key. I am confident of my bike and have improved my track-reading skills. It's all coming together very well.'
Very well indeed. After a Western swing of AHDRA races at Phoenix and Dallas, both ending in semi-final appearances, Mike went to the NHRA race in Bristol, TN where he defeated Tommy Grimes in a side-by-side 6.30 battle with a 6.36 low-e.t. of the meet. Then came the AHDRA St. Louis race and another trip to the finals, with a heart-breaking holeshot loss to strong competitor Doug Vancil.
At the most recent race, AHDRA in Commerce, GA, Romine came from the #2 qualifying spot and ran consistent 6.50's and 6.60's to capture the win from fellow Mike, Mike Lehman. A very hot weekend with air temperatures in the high 90's with extreme humidity and track temperatures of 130 degrees plus made for a very tricky track, but the Romine Racing team toughed it out and put it all together round after round. 'I want to hand it to my team, we all suffered from the heat but were able to perform the way we needed to.'
After five races, Mike Romine holds the #1 spot in the 2006 points chase by a little more than 100 points, still not enough to be 'comfortable', but a little breathing room.
