Mike Romine continued his hot streak with his third AHDRA win of the season in front of a huge crowd of family and friends at Norwalk Raceway Park in Norwalk, OH, June 10 and 11. 'We wanted to do well here because we knew that being the closest race to our hometown (Sturgis, MI) we would have the largest number of friends and family here. We accomplished our goal. We had just a spectacular eliminations day on Sunday.'
Romine struggled with tire problems during qualifying on Saturday and ended up qualified in the third spot. Crew Chief, Patty Romine, explained, 'We have had a really good tire on the bike for the last couple of races, but it is getting worn out and we need to get a new one ready. We have been trying to break one in, but the inconsistent quality of the tires has made it a difficult process. Our best qualifying time was our first pass, which we made with the old tire. Then we put on a tire that we had tried at the last race, but took it back off after only one pass because we smoked the tire that run. Here at Norwalk it also smoked the tire so we threw that one away. Then for the third round of qualifying we put on a brand new tire and the bike went left, so we weren't comfortable going into eliminations with that tire. We put the old reliable tire back on for eliminations on Sunday and we were back to our consistent performance.'
The Norwalk win puts Romine solidly in the lead for another AHDRA Top Fuel points championship, although he is not looking that far ahead. 'We have a lot of racing to do and the competition is way too tough to start talking championship. I'll leave that to the PR people. I'm only looking at the next race.'
The next AHDRA race that Romine plans to attend is Earlville, IA, but he may make an appearance at the AMRA race in Bowling Green, KY on June 24 and 25 'if the weather there is not really, really hot'.
