When Mike Romine won the first race of the 2006 season in Gainesville, FL, he had no idea that it would be an omen for the entire year. From that moment on, he never relinquished the points lead - gaining momentum throughout a stellar year. 'We won the first race and were very excited. In many past years we have struggled until halfway through the season, then got hot. This year we got a jump on it.' With four wins, two runners-up and two semi-final finishes, Mike maintained his performance through most of the season, only falling off slightly in the final three races. 'Because we had a pretty good points lead, we were trying some new parts at the end of the year. However, in Vegas we had a parts failure. The bike started missing during qualifying and we were frantically trying to track down the problem. After our first round loss, we finally found it - a broken ignition wire. We fixed it and went on to run a 6.47 and 6.43 in the Outlaw class. A little late but at least we figured it out.'
Meanwhile, as Mike blazed through an excellent season, the other half of Team R/T, Joe Timmons from Harley-Davidson of Salt Lake City, was putting together a season that would win him the Western Division Championship. At the banquet in Las Vegas, it was a busy night collecting all the hardware - both divisional championships - Eastern and Western - and the National Championship.
Another member of the Romine Racing family also received recognition in Las Vegas. Jim Fagan (who owns and rides the Pro Fuel bike on which Jack Romine is Crew Chief) was voted Pro Rookie of the Year. Jim's excellent first season in the pro ranks saw him with a win and many fast times, demonstrating to his fellow racers that he has what it takes to be a champion.
With the 2006 trophies on the shelf, Team R/T and the entire Romine Racing entourage look toward an even bigger and better 2007 - including some changes, some upgrades and maybe even some surprises.
Mike Romine would like to thank his partners in his championship quest, his 2006 sponsors - Harley-Davidson of Salt Lake City, United Specialties, Chromatic, Romine Cams & Engines, Performance Machine, Ross Pistons, and Fram/Autolite.
