Mike Romine's first win of the 2007 season came at an old familiar venue, but one that has been missing from his race schedule for several years - Beech Bend Raceway at Bowling Green, Kentucky. With rumors of a newly resurfaced track, an open schedule, and a chance to race once again with their friends from the A.M.R.A., Mike and Patty decided to make a stop there on the way to Phoenix. Saturday qualifying was filled with struggles with new parts, but Mike was able to put it all together for the win on Sunday with runs of 6.43 and 6.56. After his win, Mike commented, 'Bowling Green has always been one of my favorite racetracks and it's good to be back. Dallas has done a wonderful job of resurfacing this track. It was in excellent shape this weekend.'
Another note of triumph was the performance of Douglas Horne, 19-year-old phenom and Mike Romine protege in his first year of nitro racing. Douglas ran his first 6-second pass and his first 200+ m.p.h. pass in only his second outing on his new Mike Romine built Pro Fuel bike. Mike proudly stated, 'We are all very proud of Douglas. He is listening and learning and doing exactly what he should be doing - taking his time. Not trying to be a superstar overnight.' After Douglas ran his quickest pass (an impressive 6.78), he commented, 'Wow! That's way more fun than the Destroyer.' With Rex Harris as his Crew Chief and Douglas' dad, Steve, working as hard in the pits as Douglas is on the track, this combo will be a potent force in the future.
Romine Racing will return to Bowling Green at least two more times this season - the first will be an event on June 16 and the second will be the following weekend (June 23 and 24) for the summer A.M.R.A. event. Mike looks forward to seeing all his old Bowling Green friends and fans at these two events.
