Riding the Racing Rollercoaster
Up and down we go!
After the high of winning the AMRA race at Bowling Green, KY, the Romine Racing team headed west to attend the next AHDRA event, which was in Phoenix, AZ. Steve and Douglas Horne completed the convoy for two days of hard driving. After a couple days of R and R at Jack's house (Mike's brother and fellow Top Fuel racer), Mike was ready once again to tackle the quarter-mile. The Horne's only had one day of rest as they headed to Speedworld for Destroyer testing all day Thursday.

Saturday was another hill on the racing rollercoaster as Mike completed his final qualifying session, after a day of strong competition and quick times, with a 6.41 to capture the Number One spot. The celebration, however, did not last as long as the team had hoped. On Sunday the rollercoaster started down the hill and hit the bottom as Mike broke a belt and lost in the first round. Mike explained, 'The bike was running so well and the belt did not have very many passes on it. It had less than half of the number of passes when I normally replace the belt. I thought I was safe, but I was wrong.' The belt started tearing the teeth off early in the run and by the time Mike got to the end of the track, the belt was shredded.

Crew Chief, Patty Romine, was stoic, 'We are obviously very disappointed. We have hit a spell of bad luck for the first couple of races in the AHDRA series. I hope this is it and we can get back to our normal performance. We just need to shake free of these gremlins.'

On a high note, Douglas Horne qualified in fourth spot in Pro Fuel after some very good runs on Saturday. Unfortunately, he also lost in the first round. However, he is making great progress in his very first year of pro competition, while still continuing to have an excellent year on his Destroyer in only his second year of drag racing.

Romine Racing now heads home for a couple of weeks of refreshing motors and (hopefully) slaying gremlins before their next appearance at the AHDRA race in St. Louis.
