New Nuclear Tomato Rocks at the Rock
First win comes in second race
Some might say that it was the sweet Carolina air, some might say that it was the presence of Bob Spina after a seven year absence from Top Fuel racing, some might say it was the huge crowd of fans and well-wishers, but whatever the reason, Mike Romine pulled out of his season-long slump at Rockingham. In only its second race, the new Nuclear Tomato showed a powerful presence in the AHDRA Top Fuel class.

Mike explained, 'We were behind schedule with getting this bike up and running. Our planned Bristol debut got postponed because of the unplanned Emergency Room trip that Patty and I had to make that Friday in Bristol because of her leg injury. So we left for the Richmond race a day early and went with Steve and Douglas Horne to test at Cecil County Dragway, just to make sure everything worked and the bike went straight. The AHDRA Richmond race was the first competition and we were pretty pleased with the performance, but were still learning. Then we did a one day show at the NHRA Sportsman race in Columbus, Ohio, and zeroed in on the combination we had been searching for. I was pretty confident when we showed up at Rockingham, but everything fell into place so smoothly it was almost scary.'

Consistent runs in the 6.40's (with a 6.36 thrown in during the late Saturday qualifying session) and a little bit of luck put the Tomato in the Winner's Circle. Mike is the eighth different race winner for the 2007 AHDRA Top Fuel class and the points race tightens up again, with Mike moving into the #5 spot.

With the health issues for both Mike and Patty on the mend and the new bike up and running, the entire Romine Racing team is looking at the Rockingham race as the new start to the 2007 season.

Mike Romine and the Nuclear Tomato are sponsored by Harley-Davidson of Salt Lake City, Romine Cams and Engines, Chromatic, Performance Machine, Ross Pistons, and Fram/Autolite.
