An incredible 1.07 sixty-foot time should have launched Mike Romine into the final round at the second stop on the IHRA 2001 Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley tour. But the track and his clutch didn't agree on set-up. 'It left the line real good. At 300-400 feet, it felt really loose suddenly. Then the engine revved up. I believe the fuel system made it go flat. It could have been the sprag getting loose. But it was probably tire spin. The engine revved up right before it quit.' Romine clocked a 2.87 330 foot time of the 1320 feet of Virginia Motorsports Park. 'I think that's right where it started spinning - or whatever it did, slipping maybe.'
Romine's still elated over his first-ever IHRA number one qualifier position. And, he gets to play on Monday. His long awaited debut of the Nuclear Tomato is set for the IHRA Northern Nationals in Canada the first weekend of June. He's staying over at Virginia Motorsports Park on Monday to test his new toy. 'Some other teams are staying to test as well. The Flyin' Banana won't run again until the AHDRA race in Norwalk, Ohio in June. Then, it will be a Pro Fuel bike. If testing doesn't go well, we'll run it again as a Top Fueler in Canada. We have a lot of confidence in the new one. So we think you'll enjoy the new one there.'
While preparing for the test day on Monday, Romine is caught grinning from time to time. He's set two landmark performances in 2001 already; the #1 qualifier in Virginia and his Quickest e.t. in Rockingham. As he moves closer to his first IHRA win, it appears he's saving it for his new Nuclear Tomato.
