The Spin Gets In
IHRA Canadian Nationals, Final Qualifying, June 2, 2001
Even rider Mike Romine was impressed that his Nuclear Tomato made it into the IHRA Canadian Nationals field on it's maiden IHRA voyage. 'It spun the tire every single run. In the second round, it didn't spin it enough to totally mess up the fuel system so it ran 6.77. I rolled the throttle on instead of stabbing it in the left lane. That got us in.'

He'll take sixth in qualifying and run Steve Stordeur first round. 'We've run Steve every round of qualifying. At Virginia when I was number one qualifier, I ran him first round and spun the tire. Today, it's his turn.'

Though Romine is the lower qualifier, he believes he'll get his lane preference. 'I ran my best pass in the left lane, which, I think is the worst lane because it has a bump in it. I think the right lane is better but you can still get down the left lane real good. We ran a 6.77 in it. The number one qualifier ran a 6.59 in it. The champion ran a 6.51 there. Steve did his best in the right lane and most everyone here prefers it. I don't think the starting line is any different on either side. But I ran my best I the left. I'm ready for it again.'

The varied conditions on Friday and Saturday leave everyone waiting on Mother Nature to make their tuning calls. 'My prediction is that I will either win the round or smoke the tire. I won't roll the throttle on him in the race. I'm running 6.70's. He's in the forties. If it hooks and does not smoke the tire, I'll beat him. I sound pretty confident, hunh?'

Both competitors have basically new motorcycles. Romine goes into the day without any advantages.
'The yellow bike has run 6.51. If this bike will stick, it will run in that range. I like this bike. It actually rides better than the yellow one but I'm just having problems on the starting line.'

Currently in the top five, Romine adds, ' I need to win some rounds because I can move up. Two of the other top five are not qualified, which will allow me to go to second place in points. If I win one round, I'll go to third. If I win two rounds, I'll go to second. After this weekend, that's pretty good incentive.'
