Patty and Mike Romine prepare for a round of qualifying at the IHRA Northern Nationals. Qualified sixth after four complete rounds qualifying, Chromatic’s Mike Romine made it into the field at his home track. Sixth. Not what he’d hoped. But others didn’t make it. Romine’s philosophy is that anyone who can qualify in IHRA Nitro Harley can win. Saturday qualifying placed him in the field after a struggle on Friday.
Mike Romine's broken transmission. Out of the trailer, Romine broke a chain as a result of a broken transmission. “Since we changed transmissions, we had to make sure that everything was working. In the second round I rolled the throttle on ‘cause I was in the left lane. Everybody in the left lane was smoking the tire right in front of me. I didn’t smoke the tire. But we ran slow. 6.89. We’re eighth. I’m just going to leave it alone and hopefully the track will be better. Everything with the trans worked well. We got a computer reading for the first time, so we’re in good shape for tomorrow.”

Saturday, Romine was fortunate that the air came his way. Unlike most of his competitors at the bottom of the field, Romine moved up. A 6.695 at 198.41 made him fifth. Finally getting a good run in at their home track, the Chromatic team was ecstatic. Romine remained calm. “It ran really about what we expected it to run. I thought it might run a high 6.50 or a mid-6.60 in that lane. Stordeur went down that lane really well and it surprised me. I was scared of the lane and I hadn’t gotten a good run in. It kind of did what we thought it would do. I’m going to step on it in the right lane tonight. I think I can run a low 6.50 if I don’t spin. Everything worked fine this pass.”
In the final round, Romine ran his best, but it dropped him to sixth. “It shut off on the top end at 6.3 seconds into the run. Back here in the pit, everything seems fine in the engine. It hasn’t done that in a long time. I don’t know if the air just got worse or what. It ran a 4.29 eighth mile, three-hundredths quicker than Ray Price, which means we should have run a mid-fifty as he did. That was our second time to run Ray in qualifying and we run him in the first round of eliminations. I have a pretty tough first round first. He had three 50’s in a row, .55, .54 and .59. I know I can run a low fifty on this track if I can get it to run all the way through.”
