Mike Romine took the Nuclear Tomato to sixth in two rounds on Friday at The Rock. Returning to the home of his first 6.51 pass in 2001, Mike Romine’s disappointed in his sixth qualifying 6.754 at 176.03 run. Surprisingly, it wasn’t bike performance problems that kept him down. It was helmet attrition. “Believe it or not, I can’t ever remember my helmet coming up over my eyes and it did it twice today. I shut the bike off both qualifying passes because I couldn’t see where I was going. It went just like this, (gestures with hands) this part, the mouth part, was at my eyes before the 1000’ mark. We didn’t spin the tire at all like so many people were doing. We had a 4.38 eighth mile which isn’t great but it isn’t shabby, either. That’s good enough to run a high sixty. The only highlight for today was Patty’s birthday.” High humidity and challenging traction conditions kept qualifying times higher than the standard in Screamin’ Eagle Nitro Harley in 2001. As teams get a handle on conditions, look for improvements on Saturday.
Mike Romine’s Nuclear Tomato is sponsored by Chromatic, Andrews Products, Saddlemen and Romine Racing.
Watch IHRA on TNN Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.
