Mike Romine prepares his Nuclear Tomato for Saturday qualifying at The Rock.
Mike Romine’s first qualifying pass put him sixth in Screamin’ Eagle Nitro Harley with what he considered a bad pass. “The first two runs on Friday, I had problems with the helmet lifting. Luckily, I stayed in the throttle that first run long enough to get qualified with a 6.75. It’s so hot and muggy here this fall compared to the spring. I tuned to that 6.51 combination and we just didn’t have that kind of air. The bike quit in qualifying today with too much fuel in it. Today, I just couldn’t do anything. I smoked the tire first round. Tonight, the bike down at the top end, just shut off. I think I just missed.” Amazingly, Romine’s 6.75 kept him in the field at sixth.
Given the worsening air conditions from Friday to Saturday, and the unknown for Sunday elimination day, Romine was unwilling to commit to a combination. “I’m going to think about it. It depends on the weather. If it cools off a little bit and we have the weather we usually have here, we have a combination that will work. But as muggy and hot as it is, we just weren’t expecting. I think I have a tune-up I can run 6.60’s with. I ran 6.60’s at Epping when it was hot and 6.70’s at Joliet last weekend in the heat at an all bike event.
I think I can give him a good race first round.” Romine still seeks his first IHRA Iron Man for 2001.
Romine runs reigning champion Jay Turner in round one. “He’s going to be ready for me. We were in this same exact position, third and sixth in the spring. I jumped out at the start and beat him first round then. He’ll be ready for me tomorrow. I won’t be able to sneak up on him this time.”
