Romine Clocks an Omen for Third | IHRA President’s Cup Nationals – Maryland International Raceway Screamin’ Eagle Nitro Harley Friday Qualifying September 28, 2001 | The Nuclear Tomato is ripe in Maryland following a runner-up finish in Rockingham last weekend. Chromatic’s Mike Romine placed second after first round qualifying with a 6.66 at 198.52 miles per hour.
Romine’s said all year that it only takes 6.60’s to win an IHRA national. His first pass at MIR puts him off to a good start. Instead of grappling to get into the field, he’s safely in and can now fine-tune for Sunday power.
In second round qualifying, both Romine and the number one qualifier were bumped down a notch to third. Romine didn’t improve that round, but isn’t concerned at all. “We ran low gear out too far. It loaded up the engine and shut off.” Romine’s repaired the clutch lock-up Saturday morning and has the rocker boxes off checking things out. Last night a pushrod was loose. Preparing for a two-o’clock first round, Romine’s focused on fine-tuning at Maryland.
Mike Romine and his Nuclear Tomato Nitro Harley are sponsored by Chromatic, Andrews Products, Saddlemen and Romine Racing.
