Simply entering the AMRA Finals earned Mike Romine yet another AMRA championship. With the title ensured, Romine entered his Flyin’ Banana to qualify number one at 6.97 and 184 miles per hour on his first pass through the Beech Bend quarter mile. His second round pass revealed a 7.02 at 187 miles per hour. With dew on the track, Romine opted out of the third round at night.
Heading the eight-bike field, Romine leads the pack by three and a half tenths. Nonetheless, he takes each round seriously as competition begins Sunday. “The bump spot is 9.04, but that doesn’t mean that I couldn’t spin the tire or break a part in the first round. We treat these events just like any other. And, it gives us the opportunity to continue to fine-tune some new parts.”
Two more consecutive events remain in the 2001 season for Romine. Since an IHRA Ironman has eluded him, he’s “saving” his Nuclear Tomato and his spares for the IHRA Finals in Shreveport next weekend then the AHDRA Las Vegas Finals the following weekend. In the event of no breakage, he and his wife Patty with their Labrador Blackjack will drive straight to Shreveport.
Romine has appeared in four finals of the four AMRA 2001 events he’s entered. Capping the season with a fifth finals and fourth victory is his current goal.
