Success came in two forms for Mike Romine at the end of the AMRA Finals in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Riding the Competition Inc. Flyin’ Banana, he won the Quick 8/Top Fuel class and most importantly the championship for 2001. As a bonus, the bike broke no parts, allowing the Chromatic Racing team to continue south on the October tour and skip a trip back to Michigan for repairs. “Everything’s good,” Romine beamed after the day of racing.
Though things seem all sunshine and roses at the end of the day, Romine had his battles during eliminations. “Every round I either spun the tire or shook the tire real bad. I was having trouble. But instead of guessing and nudging the tune-up, we just left it alone and ran consistent 6.90’s and 7.0’s.” Romine won with a 6.99 in the first round. Second round, still spinning the tire, he won with a 7.17. “In the final, I spun the tire again, not as bad, and ran a 7.03. We won.” Romine’s competition ran a 7.24.
Winning the race and the championship, the AMRA Bowling Green event was Romine’s first time to put the yellow bike through the quarter-mile in the sixes since he’s put the new Competition Inc. heads on it. “We’re running high sixes with the PRP motor, the Competition Inc heads and new Competition Inc clutch.”
Winning five AMRA Nationals of his six final round appearances, Romine entered seven events to compile his 8th AMRA championship. He currently holds the AMRA Top Fuel 6.71 elapsed time record at 211 miles per hour. He set it two weeks ago at Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois on his Chromatic Nuclear Tomato.
Romine races this weekend at the IHRA Finals in Shreveport, Louisiana then the following weekend at The Strip in Las Vegas for the AHDRA finals.
Mike Romine’s Flyin’ Banana is sponsored by Competition Inc, Chromatic, Andrews Products, Saddlemen and Romine Racing.
