As if riding a Nuclear Tomato Nitro Harley-Davidson drag bike weren’t radical enough, new team mate/tuner Rex Harris has wowed the class and the crowd with the new set-up.
The scoop is – it has a scoop! Yes, an air intake scoop just above the handlebars that feed directly into the injectors, just like on an automobile.
Romine blasts off in Bradenton
With huge aspirations (pun intended) toward the IHRA 2002 championship, Romine, like many other Nitro Harley competitors, has also added an air-timered fuel system. Romine says it, “Controls the fuel system better than relying on jet can pressure. The timers tell it when to go off rather than working off of pressure and depending on the RPM of the engine.”
Never letting well enough alone, the team has also added a new multi-stage clutch. This lets the timer setting make the clutch act. Their Racepak computer monitors what's happening only- no control.
Smoky! There's a reason there are flames on that motorcycle. The team left Romine Racing in Sturgis, Michigan for the AHDRA season opener with a plan for monitoring and measuring results of the new equipment. “For Bradenton, we had planned to run Saturday incrementally; Down the track 100 feet, then shut it off and check everything to get a computer readying. Then half pass the second round. Then third pass we were going to make a full pass. The qualifying Saturday was cancelled, so we just got all screwed up.”
Sunday qualifying was planned for one round. “That was a half- track pass running 4.90.” there was a bonus second round, but no impressive numbers were revealed. “We never made a full pass there. The first two were screwed up on our plan. In first round eliminations, it shook the tire so bad, I had to get out of the throttle. We know it will run 4.80 shutting it off. But that’s all we really know.”
Harris tweaks until the very last minute.
The team test schedule has changed daily with the weather. Wednesday this week, Romine said, “We're going to Rockingham to test this weekend. The scoop is off. The fuel and clutch system are still in place.” Today, a test session is scheduled for Sunday, if the weather participates.
