Present and Accounted For, Romine Learns Though He’s 8th
Hooters IHRA AC Delco Nationals presented by Chevrolet – Friday Qualifying
Virginia Motorsports Park, Dinwiddie, VA
Having launched the Nuclear Tomato on the anniversary of the IHRA Virginia event, Mike Romine was smiling at the end of the day, though he sat eighth in the Screamin’ Eagle Nitro Harley field.

“We don’t know what happened on the first pass. We ran terrible. The motor was breaking up – missing. We found a ground wire not plugged in. So I just got out of it while it was missing to save the motor.”

When Romine got to the second round, the miss was gone. “It was running real good and it pushed the rear exhaust pipe off. I had to get out of the throttle. But we had a 1.11. 60- foot time, 2.86 330-foot time, and I got out of it before the 1/8th mile at 4.35 and 145 miles per hour. Tonight, we’re just checking everything over, since it pushed the pipe off, just to make sure that it didn’t burn a valve up. Everything checked out fine and it’s on its way back together.”

With few changes since IHRA Rockingham and the AHDRA Arizona event, the team is simply working though the combination and the new fuel system. “I think, after that second round here in Virginia, we learned a little something. We’re a lot closer than we have been. Tomorrow might be our day to do something.”

Romine reminded us of his position in Virginia one year ago. “This is the race where on Monday we brought out the Nuclear Tomato for it’s first pass. On race day, we’d qualified the Flyin’ Banana number one. It’s kind of hard to not run the stuff that we know will go up and down the track real fast, because we’ve done it before here and at a lot of tracks. But we’re looking at the long run. Like I said, I think we learned something and every once and while you’ll learn someohtihng you’ve been looking for. I’m looking forward to Saturday.”

Romine landed 8th, but hadn’t made a pass to the eighth mile.
