Romine’s Ketchup and Mustard Final Q
Hooters IHRA AC Delco Nationals presented by Chevrolet – Friday Qualifying
Virginia Motorsports Park, Dinwiddie, VA

Mike Romine's Chromatic Team prepares for final qualiyfing.
Mike Romine says it’s not worth driving all the way to Virginia Motorsports Park for a corndog, “But as long as you’re here it’s good.”

The first time he sat down all day during Saturday qualifying, besides on his motorcycle, was at the end of the day, after the final round during the night of fire. For the record, he had ketchup and mustard.

The track food, while good, was about as exciting as Romine’s qualifying sessions. “Nothing failed. It spun the tire on the starting line. Rex just missed on the clutch. We’re getting a handle on the new multi-stage set-up.”

The AC Delco Nationals second qualifying day, rounds two and three, were work, work, work for the Chromatic Team. “On today’s first round, it broke a belt and ran an 8.36. At that point, we weren’t in the show. We were kind of scared of spinning the tire so we took the clutch away hoping to run maybe a 6.60. But in the final round it still spun the tire and got loose. On the run I got out of it and back in it and ran 6.86. That qualified us 7th.”

Romine wasn’t thrilled with the run, but he was in. And as he’s known to say, on race day, anyone who can qualify can win.

The racing year 2001 hosted Romine against Team Mancuso’s Steve Stordeur more than he cared to remember. For eliminations Sunday, Romine didn’t draw Stordeur for a change. He had to take on Stordeur’s teammate Johnny Mancuso. “If it isn’t one, it’s the other.” The team scurried around the pit area Sunday morning preparing for eliminations with the 20+ degree drop in weather. “I’m putting in a set-up that will take on his 6.47,” said Harris as he ducked under his arm turning a wrench. But winning that round would bring Stordeur to Romine, should they both win the first round. “That’ll be fine with me. I’m getting used to seeing that guy out of the corner of my eye. As long as he stays behind me, everything will be fine.”

Under the light of fireworks at VMP with corndog in hand, Romine planned his race Sunday. Fans streamed out of the park, having ducked the rain after weathermen promised to spoil their fun. All was well in the world of IHRA Screamin’ Eagle Nitro Harley.
