Virginia Serves Romine Appys
Hooters IHRA AC Delco Nationals – June 1, 2002 Rainout Final
In the banquet that is racing, Mike Romine didn’t get the full dining experience that is Virginia. Granted, he had the longest wait to be seating in history – more than a month – but nonetheless, he had a taste of victory.

“I won the first round,” he said post-race back home in Michigan preparing for the upcoming Canadian Nationals less than a week post-Virginia. “We ran a 6.80, which is really not winning material. I spun the tire pretty much the first half of the track and still made it across the finish line first. Johnny Mancuso had trouble in the other lane.”

Romine made it through the appetizer, but his entrée was not as ordered. Facing his nemesis in the semi-final, another Team Mancuso member, Steve Stordeur, the team quickly prepared the bike between rounds. “We pretty much left it alone. We just tried to make it not spin early in the run. But it spun right on the line and I couldn’t do anything with it. I just shut if off because it went flat and dropped the cylinder.” After the morning practice session to get used to the track for the one-day event, the semi-final made for three spins in one day.

“It was real hot and nasty,” said Romine, a true fan of cooler weather. Spinning was the order of the day for most Nitro Harley competitors.

Preparing for the IHRA Canadian Nationals was the next order, where Romine’s brother Jack would climb aboard Mike’s normally Pro Fuel bike. “We need to fill out the field for that event. Plus, it’ll be great to race with my brother.” Changing a few things on the set-up, the two bikes will cross the border to continue their quest for the winner’s circle.

No dessert for the Romine boys, yet. Perhaps after another seating in Canada or New York.

The Chromatic Nuclear Tomato ridden by Mike Romine is sponsored by Chromatic, Andrews Products, Saddlemen, Ross Pistons, Silkolene, Autolite, and Romine Racing.
